Why baby shampoo is NOT for your lash extensions

Cleaning your lash extensions is vital to your eye health and to extend the life of your lash extensions. Occasionally you will hear lash techs suggesting that you use baby shampoo but I am going to argue against that.

Baby shampoo is gentle enough for your eyes to not cause any burning and it is relatively inexpensive so almost everyone can afford to purchase but it’s really not what is best for your eyes or for your lashes.

There are a couple of flaws when it comes to cleansing your lashes with baby shampoo. One of the first issues that clients will experience is that it doesn't contain anything to remove your makeup so unless you are barefaced all the time you're not effectively cleansing. Makeup residue can severely impact your lash growth because it blocks the lash folicule and basically suffocates it.

The second issue also has to do with the ingredients. With continued use, the fragrances and mineral oils found in the baby shampoo will start to alter the bonds of the adhesive which will cause a shorter retention time.

Now for the kicker, when you are using baby shampoo to cleanse your lashes you are potentially stripping the eyelid of its natural oils. If the eyelid is stripped of its natural oils it is going to produce more oils than were present prior to cleansing to compensate for the fact that those glands were just stripped. If you are producing excessive oil on your lids you are risking those oils breaking the bond of the adhesive.

Lash cleansers are designed specifically for extensions and are formulated with ingredients to help extend the life of your extensions so it’s best to invest in a cleanser. A high-quality professional cleanser contains ingredients formulated to both protect the lashes and nourish the skin around your eyes.
