Lashes + Mascara

For all the lash extension lovers out there you know that wearing mascara over your extensions is a major NO-NO. Mascara will close up your beautiful volume fans, it will contribute to excessive buildup on your lash line, and it will negatively impact your retention.

BUT what if you aren’t an extension wearer?

What do you need to know about wearing mascara and keeping your natural lashes healthy?

Tip Number 1:

Always remove your mascara before bed. Don’t sleep with it on EVER! This is because mascara coats your natural lashes and restricts moisture to the lash follicle which causes your natural lashes to become more stiff and brittle. The friction from your pillow while you sleep is going to cause pulling on your lashes and can easily cause them to break because they are already moisture depleted.

Tip Number 2:

Waterproof mascara is NOT an everyday mascara. If you want to avoid raccoon eyes and have fabulous carefree lashes while swimming you should think about a lash lift and tint but PLEASE do not use waterproof mascara every day.

Waterproof mascara is difficult to remove. The rubbing and scrubbing while trying to remove causes the skin around our eyes to feel raw and the continuous tugging and pulling causes the lash follicles to become weaker and could cause the lashes to fall out prematurely. Reminder, don’t sleep with your waterproof mascara just so you can avoid the scrubbing because that’s just as damaging to your natural lashes (REMEMBER. Tip 1)

Tip Number 3:

Invest in a quality makeup remover. I personally do not wear lash extensions and I have to remove my mascara nightly. Most makeup removers would leave a residue on my skin and remover cloths left me rubbing my eyes raw.

Then I found the Breakdown makeup remover from Borboleta and it changed the game. Even though it is an oil-free remover it is super powerful and can remove my mascara with ease and the ingredients are actually good for your skin. I personally love that I can recommend this product to those with and without lash extensions. (If you are a client at Remedy ask us for a sample at your next appointment)

Tip Number 4:

Quick picking.  Do NOT pick your mascara off of your lashes! This is damaging! Enough said.

Tip Number 5:

Mascara has an expiration date. You cannot keep a tube of mascara for a year and “extend its life” by adding a little water to it. The average life span for a tube of mascara is about 3-5 months. Using a mascara past its expiration means you are putting yourself at risk for bacterial infection. Think of it like keeping leftover food in the fridge for too long. After too long, mold starts to grow in the Tupperware. Keep that mindset with your mascara. If the seasons are changing, toss your mascara and go buy a new one!
