Dangers of UV Tanning
There are a number of risks associated with UV tanning and we want to share those risks with you, not only because we offer a safe sunless solution but also because we care about you being informed.
Danger #1: Sunburn
Sunburns are something that most people have experienced in their lifetime however you’ve probably not thought much more about it. What is a sunburn? What is actually happening on a cellular level to your skin?
Sunburns are caused by UV damage to the skin cells within the epidermis, which is the top layer of your skin. When those cells are damaged your body’s natural immune system sends more blood flow to that area, which is what gives that red appearance and hot to the touch feeling. Your white blood cells then will begin attacking the damaged skin cells and this why your skin starts to itch and peel. Protection from sunburns and any UV damage should always be a priority especially because there is a link between sunburns and melanoma.
Danger #2: Premature Aging
Unprotected exposure to UV rays will lead to dark age spots, leathery skin, and deep-set wrinkles. This is the exact opposite of bathing in the fountain of youth. The thing with premature aging is you won’t see the effects immediately, you may not even see it for a few years, but the damage will be so deep-set and will be very difficult/impossible to reverse. Protecting your skin is what will help you look like you took a bath in the fountain of youth when you’re much older.
Danger #3: Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious danger of UV tanning. It is a type of skin cancer that develops when melanocytes (the cells that give the skin its tan or brown color) start to grow out of control. It is one of the least common cancers but very dangerous because if it is not caught early is it highly likely to spread to other areas of the body. For women, the most common areas for melanoma to appear are on the legs, face, and neck. Our hands and eyes can also be easy targets. The easiest way to prevent melanoma is to protect your skin with SPF daily, even on cloudy days, and if you are wanting a tan we urge you to schedule the safer alternative, a spray tan. Please note that spray tans do not protect you from UV rays so SPF is still necessary.
