6 Commonly Asked Questions about Lash Extensions
It seems like everyone you know is wearing lash extensions but if you are new to lash services you probably have some questions AND this is the perfect blog post for you to be reading. In a nutshell, lash extensions are exactly what you have been looking for if you want to add length and/or volume to your lashes. So, let’s dive right in and let me help you to answer all of your questions.
1- Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes?
No...however, if they are improperly applied by someone who is not certified and a licensed professional they CAN cause damage to your natural lashes. Lash extensions are applied directly to the natural lash and are never applied to the skin. The procedure is pain free and the extensions are light weight, so they shouldn't cause your natural lashes out prematurely. I take extra care to make sure every lash is lashed and I will never use excessive amounts of glue. You will never leave with clumped lashes together, lashes applied to the skin, or damage your natural lashes because I always use proper application.
2-How long does the appointment take?
The initial application process can take anywhere from 2-3.5 hours depending on the natural fullness of the lash line and style of lashes. Lash extensions are applied while you are lying down with your eyes closed on a spa bed in a calm setting at the lash studio. After consolation, your lashes are prepped for the service and your bottom lashes are protected with a gel eye pad. The average human eye has 150-200 lashes per eye. Volume lashes can take twice as long to apply because the volume lash "fans" are created by hand at the time of application. This is a meticulous procedure that requires patience and concentration. It's important not to rush the process so that you can leave with a perfect set of lashes! Use your appointment time to take that much needed lash nap and forget about your to-do list!
3-How long do lash extensions last?
Lash extensions require touch ups every 2-3 weeks to maintain their fullness and to remove grown out lashes to prevent twisting and catching. The longevity of your extensions will vary based upon your natural lash growth cycle; if your hair grows fast, then most likely so will your lashes, and fills will be needed more often.
The average human eye sheds 5-7 natural eyelashes per day, this is 70-90 natural lashes within 2 weeks (half your natural eyelashes), this is why it is recommend to receive fills every 2 to 3 weeks.
4-How do I take care of my lash extensions?
In order to prevent infection, blepharitis or other eye health issues clients must keep their lash extensions clean by washing them. Baby shampoo is often recommended as a lash cleanser however this is not the best option for your eyes and retention. Please use an oil-free cleanser to remove your makeup and regular cleansing of debris along the lash line. It is extremely important to use an oil-fee cleanser for your lashes because oils will break down the bond of the adhesive cause your extensions to prematurely shed.
5-Can I still wear eyeliner and mascara with my lash extensions?
Absolutely no mascara. If you are wearing volume/hybrid lashes the mascara will close all of the fan. Also, mascara is difficult to remove and will harbor bacteria if kept along the lash line. Lastly, because mascara does not fully remove from the lashes it will create a barrier and negatively impact your retention.
In regards to eyeliner, yes wear your eyeliner but you might need to make some modifications. The best eyeliner for extension wearers is a black or dark brown eyeshadow and an angle brush. The powder will be easy to remove and will doesn't contain oils so it will not break down the adhesive bonds. If you are a felt pen liner wearer there are new extension approved liners available by lash companies so its best to ask your lash artist to order you one. It will be difficult to find an extension safe liner at Ulta or Sephora so its best to order from the pros on this one.
6-Can I go swimming with my lash extensions?
Yes! The whole "never get your lashes wet" rule is EXTREMELY outdated and false information and actually quite harmful to your lash line. Feel free to enjoy your fun in the sun and water but just be sure to use an extension friendly SPF and always wash and brush your lashes after a day in chlorine treated or salt water.
